[teknoids] indexing tools...used by indexers

Not meant to insult anyone's intelligence, but I hope you realize that it takes an indexer (trained person) to create a real index. They use these tools to do so. The tools themselves do not create indexes. Some tools can create concordances, but concordances are not very helpful.

And, yes, the American Society for Indexing (ASI) (https://www.asindexing.org/) is probably the best source for information on indexing. They have a directory of indexers grouped by subject matter here: https://www.asindexing.org/find-an-indexer/asi-indexer-locator/

Hope this helps!

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a good indexing tool for a book? One of our professors is asking for one.

I know MS Word can index, but I think the faculty member's manuscript is already in PDF format.

Thanks!

I knew what they were 20 years ago.... This is what the main Indexer society I know of recommends:
https://www.asindexing.org/reference-shelf/software/. Cindex <https://www.indexres.com/buy-standard-edition> was the standard back then, and I think it still is. It's about $550.

This PDF Indexer <https://www.pdfindexgenerator.com/> might be useful for your needs, but I know nothing about how reliable it is. It's about $70.

Also, creating a good index is hard if you don't have training, not to mention time-consuming. Even now, software can only do so much. Hiring an indexer is often the best option (and helps librarians!). I took a whole class in many years ago, and that just scratched the surface.

I hope this helps.

Debbie
