[teknoids] How about talking dSpace and repository issues at CALIcon18?

Elmer,

I have a CALI account and want to submit a proposal today but when I click the ‘submit a proposal’ link I get an ‘Access denied’ message. I get the same message when I click the ‘Contact Us’ button.

Since the deadline for proposal submissions is tomorrow, I’d really appreciate your help as soon as is convenient/possible for you.

Thank you,
David McGeehan

Subject: [teknoids] How about talking dSpace and repository issues at CALIcon18?

Folks,
I know a hot topic when I see one. This needs to be the subject of at least one session at CALIcon18. Who's going to do it? The deadline for submitting sessions is TOMORROW and as of right now that deadline will not be extended. I'd hate to see this topic be ignored at CALIcon18 when it's obviously something people are thinking about and working on. Visit http://2018.calicon.org/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2F2018.calicon.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cmcgeehand%40duq.edu%7Ce72ed269e21e4f4f274108d57f95c6c1%7C12c44311cf844e4195c38df690b1eb61%7C0%7C0%7C636555203616344539&sdata=PBoOX5pryM%2F6HMxCAzeS2Og9Z1EqZZ%2B3HBWlXZrrk8U%3D&reserved=0> for conference details and to submit a session proposal.
Thanks,
Elmer

You’ve got metatag conversion for Google Scholar indexing, embargoing, self-deposit through Sherpa, DOI pids, different citation styles, and a content model that allows you to publish a citation without an object attached. It does not have a content model specifically for journals; however, you could integrate one of Islandora’s 20 other content models to do the job.

If you’re looking for a Samvera-based IR, I know there are a couple libraries that have done this. Also, I think the entire California State University system is moving their shared-tenancy IR from Dspace to Samvera this coming year. Fresno State appears to be hosting a user group meeting in a couple weeks.<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwiki.duraspace.org%2Fpages%2Fviewpage.action%3FpageId%3D90970478&data=02%7C01%7Cmcgeehand%40duq.edu%7Ce72ed269e21e4f4f274108d57f95c6c1%7C12c44311cf844e4195c38df690b1eb61%7C0%7C0%7C636555203616344539&sdata=hKO9hIbHd0PMfsZeUMJwCQIaKoZqq8NmnM2VQYrE8Po%3D&reserved=0> Now, California State doesn’t have any law schools of course but I’m sure they’d be nice to you anyway, David ☺

Sorry for the late response on this. I was on vacation.

I’d be interested to hear if any law schools are working on Samvera-based projects. I think a lot of us are in either two camps: 1) we are already using Digital Commons and feel uncomfortable with its recent acquisition by Elsevier or 2) we do not presently have an IR and have eliminated looking at Digital Commons.

There is a project at Cornell called LawArXiv but it is aiming to be an open-source (and open-access) alternative to SSRN. Presently, none of the IR open-source platforms (DSpace, Hyku, Hydra, Islandora, Invenio, etc.) can host student journals as effectively as Digital Commons. The only alternative is OJS (Open Journal Systems) but it lacks the IR capability. I think it would be nice to see law schools work together to push the Samvera project along so that it could eventually serve all the functions we are presently getting from Digital Commons.

And this raises another issue that I don't think has ever been fully discussed at CALIcon: how do small development operations like law schools deal with things like the endless upgrade cycle, technical debt, end of life situations and more. This is certainly something we struggle with all the time at CALI where we have a constant tension between building new things and maintaining an increasing number of stable projects. I'd be willing to moderate a panel on this if anyone wants to discuss.
Thanks,
Elmer.

Why we chose DSpace: we started the project 2+ years ago and have a small (one-person) development staff, so the decision is both a product of what was available then, what resources we had then, and what looked good to build a database then. A lot of other products are designed for repositories, and ours is in Digital Commons. This project is something else.

We’re now looking at options to move forward since the project has grown (beyond our local knowledge and capacity) and what makes sense for us. This acknowledges that what makes sense may mean that the project is put on hold . . . but that would be tragic.

Re: DSpace 7, the development requires the ability to “survive” an upgrade without complete recoding. Our question now is whether to continue with DSpace or not, and if yes or no, how to continue development wisely and within our local means.

This could be a case that 2+ years of work goes down the drain and we start anew or migrate over; either is work that we additionally may not have the support to do immediately or in the near future . . . but such is the plight of librarians with dream projects . . .

To be continued.

Cheers,
Lisa

Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but I’m curious why you chose Dspace for this. I thought that project is getting to close to “end of life” and will be replaced entirely with Dspace 7. Did you look at Samvera? Here at Davis, we’re looking at our options and felt there was a consensus that Dspace wasn’t really a viable path anymore and that we should be looking elsewhere.

Hi Lisa.
This has been and should continue to be a fruitful topic for sessions and discussions at CALIcon. We'd welcome session proposals on how law schools are dealing with institutional repositories, including development, maintenance, usage, relations with central university, etc.
For the rest of y'all, remember, CALIcon themes tend to be more like suggestions for topics than something we use to weed out sessions or enforce ideas. We welcome any sessions that touch on tech in law schools, including things like repositories, course management systems, student printing, exam software, classroom technology, use of open source software and systems, cloud computing initiatives in admin computing. We're also always looking for sessions on open access to the law and legal services and the use of tech in law practice.
Thanks,
Elmer

I wonder if this is an opportunity for a CALI Con topic? “What’s next for repositories?” doesn’t really go with the over-arching theme but . . . just a thought for this group if there is broader interest.
