We were initially interested, but our experience was very similar to Ken’s.

I agree with Ken. There was a discussion of this a year or so ago on this very list, and it became clear that the “management” of the .law domains, as being handled by the officially designated registrar, Minds & Machines, was a disorganized mess. For law schools, different people on this list were being given different price quotes, others said follow up/communication with M&M was poor or nonexistent, etc. Maybe things have gotten better since then…

Here’s Bob Ambrogio’s post about this from October 2015:

And here’s the official website for the registrar:

After I spoke to the MMX folks, I concluded the offer to law schools is primarily a marketing ploy to get our alumni to buy the domains. Given the restrictions they are placing on who may request a domain, I do not think spoofing is at all likely. When I mentioned the availability of a domain to our communications folks, they did not jump at the chance, and I think it just adds another layer of potential confusion to folks looking for a school’s site.

I had made some inquiry into this a long time ago when they were first announced, and was supposedly added to a contact list to be notified when things were actually ready to go. I’ve not been contacted, so apparently that fell through. Where would one go to reserve these .law domains?

To answer your question, mainly just to have the name so someone else doesn’t use it for spoofing or other purposes.

Has your law school set up a .law domain? Why did you choose to do so?

  *   custom url shortener
  * just to own digital footprint
  *   manage another web presence
We are discussing it here and considering what .law domains make sense to us.

Thank you for any and all feedback.
