At the risk of carbon dating myself I recall using some great removable Avery labels for 3.5" diskettes -- surely there is a surviving version of that removable label these days.

Used them on all kinds of things ...

Since then we have been using 2"blue painters tape with a sharpie - not really a solution for you...
