We went with Panopto, a software based recording system, about 2 years ago. The recording software is site licensed so any faculty, staff or student can use it to record with any computer including iPads and iPhones, and upload to our server if given permissions. We run our own Panopto server, but hosted options are available.

Panopto includes Drop Box which allows only selected students and faculty to view the videos. All security is provided by AD integration, which allows us to grant permissions using existing security groups and network login.

We recently upgraded to the newest version of Panopto which now uses the HTML5 format. Video viewable in any browser without using Silverlight, quicktime etc. Panopto also has a podcast option. Works great for just about any use or option you can come up with. Very flexible.

Will VIMEO play on all portable devices? It's browser based isn't it?

We are currently using VIMEO Pro as an online solution to store and distribute recordings. The recordings can be set to private and require a password to access. They are also set to not be visible unless they have the direct link to the video.

We were able to distributed the mock interview recordings to each member of each group but they were only able to see the recording of their group.

I found this to be a fairly inexpensive solution that still had the restrictions of the keeping the recordings private and not viewable by the general population. By going with the VIMEO Pro account, I can manage where the recordings are seen, who can see them, and if they can be downloaded or not.

Subject: [teknoids] Student video hostin options

Good morning everyone,

We have a class called interviewing and counseling. In this class, our students practice interviewing people in front of a video camera. Students also generate videos for homework assignments. Their videos are then critiqued by their group members, which is made up of students and volunteer attorneys from the community.

We are trying to determine the best way to host these videos. We need to set each group up so that only their members, including the volunteer attorneys, and the professor can see the videos. We have 10 groups to set up this way.

What kind of hosting solutions do you use at your institution?
