Agreed.  I emailed all the students about the MAC Spotify problem as soon as we discovered it.  One student asked me in a classroom “What’s Spotify?”.

Getting a student in the middle of finals to go through this procedure may not get much cooperation. Luckily these problems seem to be only a few students in each instance reported so far.

In these situations it would be best to have the students contact the Exam Taker support line at 866-429-8889 so that we can connect to the computers and take a look at the log files and the machine itself to see if something stands out on these particular machines. Because the issue was not global it is highly likely that something specific to the machines may have caused the issue.

We have seen an issue several times with Softest and Spotify running on Macs with Yosemite.  If Spotify is left open, Softest will freeze on startup, since apparently it can’t seem to close Spotify.   We have told Mac users to close out of Spotify before starting Softest.

We haven’t seen  much during exams, but we have seen a few issues with SofTest and 10.10 this semester already.  In every case so far, we were able to option boot into recovery mode, repair disk permissions,  and run a repair disk.  That usually cleared up the issues.  On one occasion we had to reinstall SofTest.

We had a final on 4/22 and had one student who froze during the exam but after a restart she resumed the exam without issue. Our finals officially start on Monday with our entire 1L class so I am very interested in hearing about the results of this problem. Most of our students are running OS X versions under 10.10 because of a wireless issue we have so if this is related to Yosemite we probably wouldn’t have been hit with it in last week’s final.

With both students we had to power the computer down a couple of times before it would stop freezing and let them back into the exam, only to have it happen again after they went back to working on their exam for a few minutes. The professor actually ended up letting them finish their exams in word and I’m combining them with what they had in SofTest today. Has anyone else seen this?

In case you’re curious, here are the version numbers for both students:

  *   Student 1:

     *   OS X version: 10.10.3
     *   SofTest version: 11.0.498.94514

  *   Student 2:

     *   OS X version: 10.10
     *   SofTest version: 11.0.546.94578

I’ve emailed ExamSoft support, but I thought I’d see if anyone else has experienced this.
