Just wonder if anyone has seen this post a couple of weeks ago on technology audit. The discussions are also typical when teaching of technology is mentioned:

I would add a general-knowledge question regarding encryption. Something like "Do you encrypt your personal files?" or "Do you ever used encrypted email?". I would be interested to see how few future lawyers have absolutely no knowledge of such things.

Hello Everyone,

For the past several years, we've surveyed our incoming 1Ls regarding their technology ownership and use. We also recently began asking students about their experience with and disposition towards online learning. But I'm wondering if we ought to be more ambitious or if we ought to reconsider our approach.

Do any of you have thoughts or opinions on this? What do you or would you want to know of your incoming 1Ls? Please feel free to visit the survey below or consult the attachment. I'm also happy to share a copy of the survey as a Qualtrics .qsf file if anyone would like to import and modify it.

You could also add NSA as one of their off-site backup options. ;-)

Very cool!

Just from a demographic standpoint, if you're asking for gender, you might as well as for age.

With regards to the online courses, it may be interesting to see if they have any idea about what they used - blackboard, moodle, etc. And a follow up as to why they like or did not like the online courses - was it the scheduling freedom, the opportunity to interact "anonymously", didn't feel like they were known by professor, etc.

With e-textbooks, I'd also ask about their general ebook usage. Do they read ebooks for pleasure? Have they used ebooks for previous scholarship (not textbooks, but for research.) What do they use? Phone, kindle, ipad, etc. Have they ever checked out an ebook from a library?

I would like to know if they are using citation managers such as Endnote, or more advanced PDF management and annotation solutions like Qiqqa. These are becoming standard research tools in graduation education outside of law. Annotation managers such as Qiqqa provide an excellent solution to annotating, referencing, and storing legal references such as cases and articles. This would allow students to create a system to accumulate research materials during law school and smoothly transition them into practice.

I'd like to know at what point does such a survey move from being an administrative tool to a research exercise that requires approval from your institutional research board.

I'd add that as an educated guess, the safe thing to do would be to ask the IRB to find such a survey as exempt from a formal approval.

At our university the dividing line between admin tool and research is whether or not it will be published formally or informally. For example I had to get approval from our research board to post the results of our survey on our blog.

One other aspect of a survey like this is that it provides an opportunity for informal education. Hopefully the student who answers the backup questions with "None" will think? "hey, maybe I should figure out a way to backup my data."

Take Care,

Rich
