A colleague of mine on our university's main campus and I have been following this project for some time. It is a very interesting project. The Opencast meetings are usually conducted via Adobe Connect and are open to anyone. The opencast listservs have also supported some interesting discussions on the future of web video formats. If you find yourself interested in downloading and using the source or the VM the IRC channel is also friendly and helpful.

I was wondering if anyone has been following the opencast/matterhorn project? It looks really interesting. They are closing in on a 1.0 release. The web-page is over here: http://www.opencastproject.org . It is a very ambitious project that aims to put together a complete end-to-end lecture capture system. It's written in java and a lot of attention has gone into the details: uploading pre-recorded video as well as recording on the fly; supporting VGA frame grabbers in addition to video capture; allowing student annotation of videos; provision for DC metadata; close captioning, workflow (including approval) etc. A lot of big name schools are attached to the project and it looks like it has some grant funding as well.
