My colleagues at the central university are following this closely. I,
however, have not been as attentive.

I know that Tom Ryan has taken a peek at it recently...

Subject: [teknoids] Anyone following the Opencast/Matterhorn project?

There has a been a lot of recent discussion about lecture capture in
classrooms, and many of us have either created/modified open source
software or purchased commercial systems to help record lectures. I was
wondering if anyone has been following the opencast/matterhorn project?
It looks really interesting. They are closing in on a 1.0 release. The
web-page is over here: http://www.opencastproject.org . It is a very
ambitious project that aims to put together a complete end-to-end
lecture capture system. It's written in java and a lot of attention has
gone into the details: uploading pre-recorded video as well as recording
on the fly; supporting VGA frame grabbers in addition to video capture;
allowing student annotation of videos; provision for DC metadata; close
captioning, workflow (including approval) etc. A lot of big name schools
are attached to the project and it looks like it has some grant funding
as well.

Many thanks,
